the show: the contest

On one hand, telling you this means there's more competition for me. On the other hand, a) I'm never gonna get around to writing a full score for a feature-length movie by March 31 and 2) nobody reads this blog anyway. So here goes:

http://www.turnerclassicmovies-yfcc.com/

the 7th annual young film composers competition! sponsored by turner classic movies... with some very crunk gear (and, I'm sure, some great connections) to the victors... did I just say 'crunk'?

Good luck!

nerd party

well, more specifically... a 'mixed reality' gathering held by one of my favorite blogs, MakeZine. Kinda ties in to our augmented reality discussion from the past couple of weeks:

multitouch

in response to what Jeremy mentioned about the table-based touch display in the augmented reality discussion... a researcher at NYU has been working on multi-touch interfaces for systems and has some impressive demos of what to expect from such devices... check jeff han's work out.

My Bionic Quest for Boléro

Here's the Wired article I mentioned in class today in response to Mike's really cool presentation on cochlear implants: My Bionic Quest for Boléro.
Cochlear implants are really quite amazing... whatever you think of their sociocultural ramifications, the fact that we have developed basically an A/D converter for our auditory systems is pretty damn cool... I've also read that current research is looking into using Bluetooth with cochlear implants to split the processor and the part that conveys the signals to the brain as well as to provide easier cell phone usage for CI wearers (I read it in an AES journal a while back).

game boy rocks

Not that I make a habit of this, but I was at the Nintendo World Store near rockefeller plaza the other day and came across a bunch of Game Boy DSes with a crazy game (?) called Electroplankton on them. The reason I added the (?) to 'game' is that it's actually more of an interactive music tool in which you use the two screens of the DS and the stylus input to interact with things (somewhere between animated shapes and underwater-like characters) that either make music when you touch them or start moving and interact with one another and make music on their own. There's even a 'performance mode'... the program is itching for expandability to make it more of a 'real' performance tool but it is at least a pretty cool toy and a cool nod from Nintendo acknowledging the world of electronic music performance. Ch-ch-check it out.

the trader cometh

...and the Lord said, "Let There Be Trader Joe's in Union Square", and there was much rejoicing.

Can I get an amen?

ipod recording + linux

in response to praveen and ryan's discussion on convergence in the worlds of portable recording... the new 5th generation iPod does indeed have hardware capable of high-quality recording... actually, previous generations have had that capability as well, but Apple never announced software support for it. The difference this go-around is that Apple has announced on one of their sites that the new iPod supports up to 16-bit 44.1 kHz 'voice memo' recording... I haven't heard the rumor that Praveen mentioned that Apple is waiting to release their own recording device (it wouldn't surprise me though), but I know that Belkin has at least announced one product to be shipping in March or April, the tunetalk stereo (link to press release)... and i want it i want it i want it. i'm sure many other companies are working on the same...

and for those of you who own 3rd generation and 4th generation ipods and want to have a little fun, have you heard of the ipodlinux project? some enterprising geeks with too much time on their hands have actually gotten Linux to run on the ipod, enabling such things as high-quality recording and video playback on earlier generations and even the nano. someone even ported Doom to the ipod. And it's all open-source so if you're feeling enterprising as well you could even roll your own software for it!

...what, none of you have too much time on your hands?

guitarical pedagogy

in response to the great musical pedagogical software discussion we had the other day... guitar port (note: noisy website, so mute your computer if you're sitting in the library and don't want to make a fool of yourself like I just did) is something I wish I had 100 years ago when I started playing guitar. Anyone want to work on a piano version with me?

I also mentioned some videogames that aren't exactly formal music training software but their basic premises could possibly be borrowed from in the creation of engaging yet educational (shudder) music games:

Hello the dark, my old friend.

under the category of 'more machine translation goodness'... apparently someone else is interested in the irreversible effects of machine translation and went so far as to hold a contest to see if people could guess popular song lyrics that had been translated to and from another language using AltaVista's BabelFish.

One of my favorites is "Like a Rolling Stone":
"Once on a time you dressed so very well. You sent the vague ones to the currency of ten cents in your premium, not you?"

babelfish in a PSP?

funny how these links always appear after we talk about them in DAP class...
Talkman makes debut as latest language assistant software
from the article:
About 3,000 conversation patterns that could take place during the course of shopping or visiting holiday destinations are recorded on Talkman. A user may speak the words "Koko-wa-dokodesuka?" (Where is this?) in Japanese, for example, into the device's microphone, upon which a cartoon bird acting as an interpreter will pop up and start talking in the user's language. The bird is also able to translate the reply into Japanese.

¿porqué no?

i've been noticing lots of music-y, tech-y, & otherwise nerd-y stuff all around lately and thought some of y'all would be interested in some of this stuff as well but i didn't want to spam the mtech mailing list. i figured why not make a blog where we could all share links that could help us put off our pohlmann readings for that much longer.

i'm looking in to how to let everyone from dap post to this; if you're good at blogger and / or have any links to share in the meantime, send me an e-mail at b a k 2 8 2 at en why you? dot edu.

rock on,
